Regulations:
Colne Yacht Club Cadets is run on a voluntary basis by
club members. Both Saturday Sailing and Activity Week are not intended to be
formal training courses as the adults involved do not necessarily have RYA
qualifications. However, those organising cadet events are experienced sailors
and our aim is to encourage young club members to take an interest in sailing.
More experienced cadet members will often be responsible for helming boats
themselves and for helping less experienced cadets to try their hand at helming.
All sailing takes place under overall adult supervision and safety boats are on
the water at all times in the ratios that constitutes RYA "best practice"
Clothing & safety A guide to clothing is on the website.
At all times you should wear suitable clothing. The water is usually cold all
year and being immersed in it can leave you cold and tired. This can be avoided
by the correct clothing. Apart from the temperature, wind can cause you to feel
cold. Please make sure you have: A complete change of clothing for after
sailing, Towel and soap, drink and suncream. A steamer wetsuit is recommended.
MUST DO's & DONT'S
No one will be allowed to sail unless they have attended a safety briefing.
Guests and new members will need to attend these briefings, to be held on the
first Saturday of each month.
Signing on
Cadets will meet and sign on in the boatyard between 9 and 9.30 am before going
to the changing room.. Any late arrivals may not be able to sail. You will be
allocated a dinghy which you must prepare and take down for sailing by . When
the dinghy is on the hard you may get changed. The changing rooms will be opened
after boat allocation has been made. Boats will be launched at 10AM.
Signing off
Everyone is responsible for signing off as soon as they come ashore. This is
important as in case of an emergency we need to know where everyone is and who
is still on the water. We can waste hours looking for you if you are safely at
home and have forgotten to sign off.
Putting boats away.
After sailing activity all helms and crews will be responsible for putting
the boat away. Boats will not be taken through the car park. The boat should be
rinsed down, de-rigged and covered up (if available). The boat must be approved
by the Officer Of the Day before the crew leave the yard. Any breakages must be
reported to the OOD to make sure the boat is ready for next time.
Rinsing clothing
Rinse off mud etc in the boatyard. Never use the shower to rinse sailing
clothes.
Water side.
Over the line between shore and water runs from the barrier by the hard
masters hut, the seawall to the gates of the club jetty is waterside. Suitable
buoyancy aids or life jackets will be worn at all times by all participants
including helpers, leaders, mutineers and cadets. No one will go afloat or into
the water until the safety boats are on station.
Shoreside
No one will leave the shore side area unless collected and they have
notified a leader. Care should be taken on the roads as there are tractors and
cars launching and recovering boats all the time. Treat the road the same as you
would any road.
Property
Please ensure that everything is clearly marked with your name. At the end
of the day the changing rooms are cleared and lost property is placed in the
drying rooms. If you take something away that is not yours please ring a leader
and bring it in next time. Don't take anything of value on to the water, it can
easily be lost over the side. Valuables left in the clubhouse can also be lost.
It is better not to bring it with you.
Salt rash
Make sure that you have a shower after sailing and that all your sailing
equipment is completely rinsed. Sea Salt will stick and it can cause a nasty
rash after a few days which stings.
Weather.
We have no control of the weather. If the leaders agree consider that the
weather is unfavorable then sailing will not take place. We will organise an
alternative activity.
